What is paintball

Paintball is essentially a game of tag with paint balls. Depending on what type of game you are playing, the style of play can vary quite a bit. There are two main formats:

  • woodsball

  • speedball

Woodsball: The game that started it all. Woodsball is basically what the name implies, a game of paintball played in the woods. For amature players, this is by far the most popular setting for paintball, because it doesn't require expensive bunkers. All you need is a big back yard with some type of cover. Trees and brush provide the main cover. Sometimes there are forts, trenches or other man made fortifications to alter game play. Because it is played in the woods it offers another sub category, scenario games.

Scenario games: Since you are playing a game where you shoot people in the woods it makes sense that some people would like to pretend that they are in an actual military battle. By using realistic looking markers (paintball guns) and other items such as camoflage clothing, paint grenades, paintball hand guns, paint land mines etc. they can add tothe feel of realism. Using a scenario furthers the realism even more. For example, one scenario might be: One team has to transport hostages from fort A to fort B while the other team's objective is to free the hostages before team one makes it to base B. The variety of scenarios are limited only by your imagination.
Oklahoma D-day is a famous week long scenario were hundreds of people reenact D-day. It is one of the largest paintball games in the world.

Speedball: Speedball uses a lot smaller field than a woodsball game. Unlike a scenario or wooodsball game, the teams are usually limited to seven people. Depending on the format, the teams can vary from three to ten players. Due to smaller fields, it is harder to cheat which makes it attractive to professional players. It also means it is easier to watch as a spectator than woodsball. In turn, this is helping the industry to grow. Since its popularity, it has given birth to several different leagues, each with different rules and regulations. They include: NPPL (National Paintball Players League), PSP (Paintball Sports Promotion) and Xball format which is a variation of center flag.
